What is an academic source

something that is reviewed written or identified by someone who has experience / an expert in that field  as well as it is credible and reliable. They are also researched into.

to make it academic it has to have the author credentials a list of references and if the publisher who is a professional or if it was published by a university they are more than likely going to be an academic source.

Types of academic sources

books
academic journals
magazines
websites

Advantages and Disadvantages of these are

Books are normally credible and reliable because they have to reviewed and proof read before published. However books can tell two sides of a story as well as can be outdated and irrelevant due to how time have changed since published so it depends on the topic you are looking for.

Academic journals are pieces of work written by university professors as a collection of essays and they will more than likely go into more detail than a published book and they are likely to be more reliable because the are written by a professor. But they could cost a monthly payment or could be hard to find.

Website can be changed and have may not of been peer reviewed and that the website is posting fake news but they could be good because they have a lot of information and could go into great detail and they could have a large variety.

Magazines would be unto date and have a subscription service and they could have a fact and figure based  which could be useful and can be easily accessible but they could be basic and brief and expensive and the content could be changed fro the viewer or be bias.

Title

The never ending appeal of war films with a critical comparison between The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan.

I chose this title because it represented what i wanted to preach which was the endless appeal of war films ans showing there quality enjoyment and endless attraction as well as potentially there educational purposes as well as i chose to compare these two films to show the evolution in war films and

Idea

Could talk about genre and audience talk about how war films have evolved over two decades and how the shift focuses form heroism into the physiological effects and how the tone shifted and how that effected the audience as well as how the audience got bored of happy endings and then it all changed when the new Hollywood movement came in and the happy endings were few and far between

Quotes and ideas

1. Stephen Henderson, national manager of special projects at the Returned and Services League, says cinema helps us understand the enormity of conflicts. “Humans by nature are inquisitive and seek knowledge to assist in the understanding of life, its complexities, virtues and horrors,” he says.

2. "How do you like your war film? Do you prefer a varnished version of the truth that presents the soldiers of your country/ cause fighting a just, righteous battle against the forces of evil?"

It has been stated that contemporary war films present "a varnished version of the truth", focusing more on the victors rather than the defeated and the physical and physiological effects on either side. Rather they show soldiers "fighting a just, righteous battle against the forces of evil". This is evident in The Longest Day....

example in film started to show repercussions but as serious due to duration

This is a great example of the transition into the more serious time where war film shows the repercussions of war and how they effected the solder and the families back home.In this scene it shows Sergeant Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) a German officer who has suffered shell shock (psychological disturbance caused by prolonged exposure to active warfare, especially being under bombardment) after Russian bombardment and wakes up in a field hospital where he hallucinates and is pulled out of combat for 3 weeks to recover.

Hallucination scene

This is another scene from Cross of iron where a soldier is caught if guard during an attack and is left alone during it as well as having shell shock meaning he is scared to hell and docent want to move.

Today, films such as Saving Private RyanThe Thin Red LineStallingradFlags of Our Fathers, and Letters From Iwo Jima have approached even World War II with a perspective reflecting the horrors of war and lacking the glamorization and adventurism of so many previous films about the conflict, even when these recent films still had highly romanticized elements and sentiments at times. Films about more modern warfare, such as the Hurt LockerThe MessengerRedactedIn the Valley of ElahStop-Loss, and Brothers, have further reflected how much this new conception of war is firmly established in cinema.(Hughes, 2020)

Saving private ryan "a gritty realistic recreation" - Jones, N. (2020). D-Day on screen: 5 TV and film depictions of the Second World War operation. [online] HistoryExtra. actually shows you war in saving private Ryan rather than a glorified version of the truth
longest day less violent less realistic men smiling and not being shot at

longest day landing craft comparison the soldiers are just being told by commander and preparing the weapons and in saving private ryan the soldiers are being sick praying breaking down and crying

longest day does show more heroism at point du hock where an american is climbing up the cliff face and it shows that he is up the cliff and he notices a cable with a soldier on it slipping down a hill and he climbs up and holds on to himself which shows the heroism of the films in that time period rather than the

Longest day quotes - Zanuck meant “The Longest Day” to be a statement about history—a statement carried out by the countries that made history.

The movie treats the Germans (only officers appear) as bristling and smart, the Brits as noble, curt, and resourceful, and the French as gallant

The sequence combines beauty and terror.

Saving private ryan quotes - The themes of “Saving Private Ryan” are traditional—loyalty, courage, self-sacrifice.
